Fish Common Diseases - Organic Supplements

Fin / tail rot

  • Fin edges turn black / brown.
  • Fins fray.
  • Base of fins inflamed.
  • Entire fin may rot away or fall off in large chunks.
  • Fins have white dots (if these are seen on the body it is possibly a symptom of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Ich or white spot

  • Small white spots resembling sand.
  • Fish scratch against rocks and gravel.
  • In advanced stages fish become lethargic.
  • Redness or bloody streaks in advanced stages.

Dropsy

  • Swollen belly - filled with fluids
  • Internal organs are damaged
  • Appearance of skin lesions
  • Left untreated - the fish may die

Lice

  • Common symptoms for fishes infected with lice include lethargy (due to anemia), paleness, and inflammation and redness surrounding the affected area.
  • Fishes with these parasites will also rub or brush against objects, attempting to remove them on their own.

Anchor worms

Anchor worms (Lernaea spp.) are external copepod parasites that attach to fish under scales.

Symptoms include -

  • Frequent rubbing or "flashing"
  • Localised redness.
  • Inflammation on the body of the fish.T
  • Tiny white-green or red worms in wounds.
  • Breathing difficulties.
  • General lethargy.

Gill flukes

Gill flukes or Dactylogyrus are parasites, which particularly lodge in the gills of koi. A gill worm consequently is a very dangerous parasite, which will not become larger than 0.1 to 0.3 mm.

The symptoms of infection by gill worms include

  • keeping one gill shut,
  • accelerated breathing,
  • shaking the head,
  • swimming backwards and
  • rubbing gills.

Epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS)

  • At first, fish develop red spots on the skin.
  • These lesions expand to form ulcers and extensive erosions filled with necrotic tissue and mycelium.
  • This is followed by the development of granulomas on the internal organs and death.

Luminescent vibriosis - V harveyi

  • Common in penaeid shrimp, the characteristic symptom is glowing of the body in the dark, and is associated with mortality of larval shrimp in penaeid shrimp hatcheries

Bacterial Gill Disease

  • Because the gills are primarily affected, fish suffering from bacterial gill disease have respiratory problems, with visibly rapid or labored breathing and swimming close to the surface of the water as if trying to get air.
  • They show signs of a lost appetite, with little to no eating.

Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND)

  • Clinical signs include -
  • a pale-to-white hepatopancreas (HP),
  • significant atrophy of the HP,
  • soft shells,
  • guts with discontinuous, or no contents,
  • black spots or streaks visible within the HP (due to melanised tubules).

Necrotising hepatopancreatitis (NHP) in peneaids

  • Signs of the disease often include -
  • lethargy,
  • emaciation,
  • heavy protozoan or bacterial fouling and a reduced growth rate.
  • Gross pathological signs are - soft shell, flaccid body, black gills, an empty intestinal tract, degenerated or atrophied digestive gland (hepatopancreas), which appears pale to white, and black (melanised) streaks in the hepatopancreas.

Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN)

  • Clinical disease may be characterised by
  • a swollen abdomen or eyes,
  • darkening of the skin,
  • spiral swimming and faecal casts trailing from the vent.
  • Internally there may be pancreatic necrosis, a catarrhal exudate in the intestine and haemorrhages in the visceral organs.

Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS)

Clinical sigs of acute viral hemorrhagic septicemia may be nonspecific and include -

  • lethargy,
  • darkening of the skin,
  • anemia (evidenced by pale gills), and
  • hemorrhages in many locations including the skin at the base of fins, muscles (dorsal musculature), gills, internal organs, meninges, and eyes.

Infectious haematopoetic necrosis (IHN)

Clinical signs of infection with IHNV include

  • abdominal distension,
  • bulging of the eyes,
  • skin darkening,
  • abnormal behavior,
  • anemia, and
  • fading of the gills.
  • Infected fish commonly have hemorrhage in several areas - the mouth and behind the head, the pectoral fins, muscles near the anus, and (in fry) the yolk sac.

Lymphocystis Disease

The viral infection causes -

  • growths on the skin or fins, which look similar to cauliflowers.
  • The fish start growing small white pin-prick like growths on their fins or skin and this is often mistaken for infection by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in the early stages.
  • It soon clumps together to form a cauliflower-like growth on the skin, mouth, fins, and occasionally the gills.

Branchiomycosis - Gill Rot

  • Branchiomycosis is an acute infection of the gills that can cause high mortality and respiratory distress in many species of ornamental and freshwater fish such as the Koi, the eel, the bass and the perch.

  • Branchiomycosis affects the fish's gills by causing them to become mottled, or blotchy in appearance due to the dying tissue. For this reason it is also known as "gill rot." There may also be traces of gray on the surface of the skin.

Ichthyophthiriasis (ICH)

  • The disease is caused by the ciliate protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, commonly called ich or ick.
  • Fish infected with ich typically develop small, blister-like, raised lesions (white spots) on the skin and/or fins.
  • If the infection is restricted to the gills, however, no white spots will be seen.

Fish Pox

  • Causes transient focal lesions of benign, nonnecrotizing epidermal hyperplasia.

  • Juvenile fish can be adversely affected by Carp Pox and can suffer a high mortality, developing signs such as anorexia, intermittent immobility, exophthalmia, darkened skin and haemorrhages on the operculum and abdomen. Adult fish usually show no other signs.

Swim bladder disorder

  • Commonly seen in goldfish and bettas

  • The swim bladder does not function normally due to disease, physical abnormalities, mechanical/environmental factors, or for reasons that cannot be diagnosed.
  • Affected fish will exhibit problems with buoyancy, that is, they'll have difficulty controlling their ability to float or sink.
