White Gut Disease in Shrimp & Prawn

White Gut Disease in Shrimp & Prawn

White gut disease (WGD) is a common bacterial infection that affects farmed shrimp, particularly the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). It is caused by the bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus and can lead to significant economic losses for shrimp farmers.

Symptoms of WGD

  • White, opaque gut: This is the most characteristic symptom of WGD and is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the shrimp's digestive system.
  • Reduced appetite: Shrimp with WGD may eat less or stop eating altogether.
  • Lethargy and weakness: Affected shrimp may become sluggish and unresponsive.
  • Mortality: WGD can cause high mortality rates, especially in young shrimp.

Causes of WGD

The bacterium responsible for WGD, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, is found naturally in the marine environment. However, several factors can increase the risk of WGD outbreaks, including:

  • Poor water quality: High levels of organic matter, low dissolved oxygen, and high ammonia levels can stress shrimp and make them more susceptible to infection.
  • Overcrowding: When shrimp are crowded together, they are more likely to come into contact with the bacteria and spread the disease.
  • Poor nutrition: Shrimp that are not receiving proper nutrition are more susceptible to disease.
  • Stress: Stress from factors such as handling, transportation, and temperature fluctuations can also make shrimp more susceptible to WGD.

Diagnosis of WGD

WGD can be diagnosed by examining the shrimp's gut for the characteristic white appearance. However, this is not always definitive, and further testing may be required to confirm the diagnosis. This may include bacterial culture or PCR testing.
